DXTalk: Doin' It For Themselves

On International Women's Day, DX is hosting a rapid-fire presentation featuring creatives, innovators, and disruptors who discuss their products, services, and systems that are poised to change the shape of things to come. In six minutes and 40 seconds each, presenters take us through their startups, challenges, successes, and inspirations. The speakers for this program represent a progressive, innovative, and creative future. Their businesses inspire, promote change, and seek to improve lives on a global scale. And they're Canadian.

In Canada, women represent the majority of young university graduates, but are still underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, architecture, and traditional design disciplines. Perhaps change is on the horizon – in November 2017, the Business Development Bank of Canada committed another $20 million to its Women In Tech program total a whopping $70 million investment over five years. "The Government of Canada is committed to supporting women entrepreneurs as they work to find the support they need to start and grow their businesses," said Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, last year.

Presenters:

Alyssa Bertram, founder of easy.
Izzie Colpitts-Campbell, Programming Director at Dames Making Games Toronto
Maleeha Alvi, co-founder of Eatonomy
Kristal Lewis, founder of Senior Care Connect Inc.

Why Everyone Should Own a Giant Robot Arm: Video

It started as an off-hours hobby, but when Biying (Co-Founder of Hot Pop Factory) began 3D printing and distributing a retail product right out of their home, their understanding of traditional manufacturing processes was completely altered. One year, several TV interviews, and a few art installations later, they had both quit architecture jobs to start their own design and fabrication workshop.

Come check out third talk and learn everything you didn’t want to know about computational design and digital manufacturing processes like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining. These are the tools that will revolutionize the way physical products will be designed and made over the next 10 years.
